Beginner Deck Building Guide
Follow these steps in order. Use your DeckForge materials list as your shopping guide.
BEFORE YOU START
- • Get your full materials list from this app (use the PDF button)
- • Call your local building department for permits
- • Call 811 to mark utilities before digging
- • Have at least one helper for heavy lifting
- • Mark the exact deck area with string and stakes
- • Ensure the ground slopes away from the house (¼" per foot)
- • Remove grass and debris from the entire footprint
- • Mark the ledger location on the house and make it perfectly level
2
FOOTINGS & POSTS (Most Important Step)
- • Dig holes 12" wide and at least 24" deep (confirm local frost line)
- • Add 4–6" of gravel at the bottom for drainage
- • Pour concrete and set posts perfectly plumb (check with level on two sides)
- • Let concrete cure 24–48 hours before building on it
Safety: Never work alone when pouring concrete or setting posts.
3
FRAMING (Ledger, Beam & Joists)
- • Install ledger board on house with proper flashing and structural screws
- • Set the main beam on top of the posts
- • Hang joists using joist hangers at both ends
- • Add blocking between joists and install the outer rim board
- • Start laying boards from the house outward
- • Use spacers for even ⅛" gaps
- • Fasten with 2 screws per joist (pre-drill ends)
- • Stagger joints and leave a small drainage gap at the house
5
ROOF (If you selected it in the app)
- • Install rafters on top of the beam or ledger
- • Add roof sheathing, then drip edge and flashing
- • Install your chosen roofing material (shingles, metal, or membrane)
- • Add ridge vent if using a gable roof
6
RAILINGS, STAIRS & FINISH
- • Install code-compliant railings if deck is over 30" high
- • Build stairs if needed (max 7.5" riser, min 11" tread)
- • Apply sealer or stain after the recommended waiting period
- • Add skirting around the bottom if desired
Tip: Take photos as you build. They’re very helpful if you ever need to make changes or get help.
Have a Question While Building?
This app is designed to help you plan and build. If you get stuck, here’s how to get good answers quickly:
When asking for help, include:
- • Your deck size (from the app)
- • Which phase you’re on
- • What exactly is confusing or wrong
- • Photos if possible (very helpful)
Common questions beginners ask:
- • “Is my footing deep enough?”
- • “How do I attach the ledger safely?”
- • “The beam is sagging — what now?”
- • “Can I change the roof style later?”
Pro tip: Save your plan in the app first, then describe your exact situation.
The more specific you are, the better the answer you’ll get (whether from a contractor, inspector, or AI assistant).
